• Words are taken in their normal, natural meaning
• Figures of speech are recognized as such
• Symbolic passages are interpreted symbolically only when the text demands it

• Historical events (Creation, Flood, Exodus)
• Moral commands
• Doctrinal teachings
• Prophetic promises

Examples of non-literal language

• “The Lord is my shepherd” (Psalm 23:1) — metaphor
• “I am the door” (John 10:9) — figure of speech
• “The seven stars are…” (Revelation 1:20) — symbolic, but interpreted in the text
